harmonium, also called a “melodeon”, “reed organ” or “pump organ”, is a keyboard instrument that is a lot like an organ. It makes sound by blowing air through reeds, which are tuned to different pitches to make musical notes.  This is joined to a mechanism which operates a bellows, sending air to the reeds.

Harmonium reeds are made of either copper or brass. Brass reeds have a louder, more penetrating sound. They are popular for kirtans and bhajans where often a number of people are singing vigorously.

The harmonium was conceived in the West, but today largely resides in the East, particularly in the Indian subcontinent; so much so that many mistakenly think it to be an Indian instrument.
